Some 600 computer systems used to “mine” bitcoin and also other virtual currencies have been stolen from information centers in Iceland in what police say could be the greatest series of thefts ever in the North Atlantic island nation. Eleven individuals were arrested, including a security guard, in what Icelandic media have dubbed the “Big Bitcoin Heist.” A judge at the Reykjanes District Court on Friday ordered two men and women to remain in custody.
The strong computers, which have not yet been found, are worth almost $2 million. But when the stolen gear is employed for its original objective – to create new bitcoins – the thieves could turn a huge profit in an untraceable currency with no ever selling the products.
“This is really a grand theft on a scale unseen prior to,” mentioned Olafur Helgi Kjartansson, the police commissioner on the southwestern Reykjanes peninsula, where two in the burglaries took spot. “Everything points to this becoming a hugely organized crime.”
Three of 4 burglaries took place in December plus a fourth took spot in January, but authorities didn’t make the news public earlier in hopes of tracking down the thieves.
